What are 'key blanks' and 'pre-cut keys'? What makes them different?

‘Key blanks’ and ‘pre-cut keys’ are two terms you may see appear more than once throughout our help center articles. We understand that not everyone is familiar with these terms, so we are here to help! The information below will help fill in the details for you on this topic.

Key Blanks

Key blanks are keys that have not been cut with a specific key bitting, which are the ridges you typically see on the blade of a key. It is important to note that not all key blanks are compatible with all locks just because they have not been cut yet. When purchasing key blanks for your Architectural Mailboxes product, please use this helpful article to determine which key blank is right for you.

Pre-Cut Keys

Pre-cut keys or cut keys are keys that have already been cut to fit a specific lock. These keys are typically a bit more expensive to purchase than key blanks because they are ready to use upon receipt. Pre-cut keys are not available for all Architectural Mailboxes models. See the next question below to check if pre-cut keys are right for you.

Order Information & Warranty

Can your mailboxes be painted?

Yes – you can paint your mailbox – but it is important to note that painting your mailbox will void the warranty associated with the product.

Our mailboxes are powder coat painted to provide protection, so we do not recommend painting over the powder coat finish.

However, if you do choose to paint your mailbox a different color, wipe the mailbox down with rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt and oil and let the mailbox dry before painting. Use an outdoor paint and a primer before applying coats of paint for optimal results.

Are your mailboxes USPS approved?

Yes, all of our mailboxes that are required to be “USPS Approved” are formally reviewed by USPS Engineering and officially approved by the U.S. Postal Service. We pay keen attention to every step of the arduous process to properly design, test and certify our products according to the stringent USPS Specifications and Standards.

It is important to note that there are some mailbox manufacturers who simply stamp their mailboxes “US MAIL – Approved by the US Postmaster General,” but whose mailboxes are not actually approved. This is illegal, unethical and a fraudulent business practice.

When in doubt, contact your local USPS Postmaster and ask them to provide you with the latest list of approved receptacles. You can also find the official approved manufacturer list, published in the May Edition of the USPS Postal Bulletin.

No. All of our mailboxes are designed to receive mail deliveries without the use of a key – either through a concealed mail slot or a hopper door. This means that you do not need to give your mail carrier a key to your personal mailbox.

If you are using an existing post, not made by Architectural Mailboxes – please refer to the mounting hole diameter and pattern associated with your mailbox instructions sheet to determine the hardware you will need for installation.

Does my post mount mailbox need to be installed at a certain height? How far from the street should it be placed?

It is required that you contact the local Post Office before installing your post mount mailbox to ensure its correct placement and height at the street.

Generally, post mount mailboxes are installed at a height of 41-45 inches from the road surface to the inside surface of the mailbox where the carrier places the mail. If you have a locking mailbox with a mail slot for the carrier to use for mail – this measurement would be to the lowest edge of mail entry where the carrier places the mail.

The front face of the mailbox must be set back 6-8 inches from the front of the curb or edge of the road as shown in the illustration below.
